Big News—James Beard Awards Gives a Nod to ... Simon's.
Alas, Des Moines chefs did not get on the ballot for "Best Chef—Midwest." But Simon's got a significant nod that should do us all proud.
The James Beard Nominees for Best Chefs/Restaurants have just been announced. I was not surprised to see Andy Schumacher (Cobble Hill, Cedar Rapids) on the list for “Best Chef—Midwest.” He’s been there before, and, in my experience, he does exemplary work. (Disclosure—it’s been quite a few years since I’ve visited personally, but when I did, I enjoyed the restaurant and said so in print.)
No other Iowa chef was nominated in this category.
But here’s the most exciting restaurant news of the day: Simon’s (that little restaurant on Merle Hay Road that always has a wait) has been nominated in the prestigious Outstanding Hospitality category. This award isn’t confined to a single region—it spans the entire country, making it an exceedingly remarkable honor.
When I visited Simon’s last autumn, it was clear to me that owner Simon Goheen possesses a gift for hospitality that can neither be taught nor imitated. It’s innate, and his team mirrors his exceptional approach.
I’ll be sharing more of my thoughts about Simon’s and this recognition in the coming weeks.
But for now, a question: Given that more than one restaurant in the state could have been nominated for a Best Chef — Midwest award, who else do you think should’ve been on the list, in addition to Cobble Hill? I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours!
