Remember last winter’s invite to the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative Holiday Party … you know, the one that got cancelled due to that dastardly ice storm? IWC members (and Madison Countians) Deb Engle, Marianne Fons, and Vicki Minor have been retooling the event, and they’ve come up with something quite off-the-beaten-path. Literally!

Here are the details. The link to an RSVP form appears below.

The movie won a slew of awards. And its real-life hero, Art Cullen, has won a Pulitzer Prize.

Paid Subscribers—You’re Invited!: A Private Movie Screening + Q&A with Art Cullen + An After-Party

Saturday, July 26, starting at 3 p.m. at the Iowa Theater in Winterset, Iowa

Yay! A small-town theatre that’s been beautifully restored.

Join us for a private screening of Storm Lake, the award-winning documentary about Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Art Cullen and his family’s fight to keep local news alive in small-town Iowa.

We’ll gather at the beautifully restored Iowa Theater, right on Winterset’s historic town square. This jewel-box theater—fresh off a $1.2 million renovation—features plush seats, a top-notch sound system, and a cozy small-town-theatre ambiance.

🎥 What’s showing:
Storm Lake (2021; 1 hour 25 minutes)
The story of a scrappy newsroom, a small town, and why local journalism still matters.

🍿Popcorn and More
Iowa-grown popcorn (served with real butter), local beer, wine, hard cider, Coke products, hot coffee, and a tempting lineup of old-school candy are all available for purchase.

🎤After the film:
Stick around for a conversation with the man himself, Art Cullen, moderated by IWC founder and veteran journalist Julie Gammack.

🍷 Cap it off in style:
The day wraps up with appetizers and a cash bar at a unique event space just off the town square—your chance to mingle, chat, meet other Iowa Writers’ Collaborative members and their subscribers, and toast the power of storytelling.

🛣️ Make a Day of It
Come early to wander Winterset’s charming square or take a scenic drive to the Covered Bridges of Madison County.

🎟️ Free for all paid subscribers.
Would you like to bring a plus-one? They’re warmly welcome to join us for the film and the after-party for just $20. Or better yet, tell them to become a paid subscriber to my newsletter (or any other newsletter in the IWC), and they’ll be invited for free.

Hope to see you there

IWC member Marianne Fons was a force in helping to restore the Iowa Theatre. She and her pals are inviting us all down to see the results!
