This double-baked almond croissant alone is worth a drive to Indianola.

Hours: Tuesday through Friday: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Sunday: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Closed Monday.

My friend Staci and I had been trying to meet up in Indianola all summer long, but for one reason or another, we had to keep postponing. You know how it is.

But don’t you make the same mistake. Schedule a morning or early afternoon trip to Indianola while the countryside is blazing with color, and before the cold sets in. It’s a beautiful, mere 25-minute drive from downtown Des Moines, and Indianola is a lively destination.

Indianola? Lively? Really?

I know. Dave was a longtime professor at Simpson College; I often taught adjunct there. Sometimes we’d go to the town square for a bite, but downtown was never by any means a destination, in my book.

But now it is. Staci and I finally met up…
