When Julie Gammack asked me to start dining column on the Des Moines dining scene as part of the Iowa Writer’s Collaborative, I was reluctant at first. Why would I want to review restaurants? Been there done that, for 20-plus years in fact (15 years for The Des Moines Register; a few more years for dsm Magazine).

Then I realized — well, this could be enjoyable for me and useful for readers if I took a broader approach. I’ve laid out what I plan to do, and I thought I’d share it with you so you’ll know what to expect if/when you subscribe.

What’s this newsletter all about?

I’ll be covering the Des Moines Dining scene, with news, reviews, opinions, and insights, as well as interviews with pros in the industry. Occasionally, I’ll write about worth-a-drive destinations outside of Des Moines (The Webster, an amazing restaurant in Iowa City, for example).
