Three highly acclaimed Midwestern chefs tell me about their commitment to approachable, less-complicated cuisine that's nevertheless quite refined. Where can we find this in Des Moines?
Good article. Entrepreneurs that succeed one day say what they all say. “You learn to trust what you believe in.” At least that’s what I believe 35 years into my adventure in being an entrepreneur.
That can apply to writing, too! You have to trust what you believe in! It can be so tempting to try to write the “going thing,” but if it’s not something you truly believe in, it probably won’t work.
I hope you get a chance to visit one of those. The closest one is either Cafe Mir in Fertile (north of Mason City) or The Webster in Iowa City. Knowing you, I think you'd like Cafe Mir the best. It's very down to earth. Worth a road trip with your pals!
Yes to Cafe Mir! We hope to get back to Fertile just for another meal there. Such creativity and attention to detail. Don’t be fooled by the plain-sounding items on the menu. They are familiar but exciting.
Wini, Keep on writing about the many aspects of dining in, and “reachable from” Des Moines. They are exactly what this appreciative reader wants! Your column about all things France has also captured my imagination. Thank you!
I suspect I have asked this question one other time, and here goes again: Is there a way to index your columns so that I can look for your suggestions when I’m anticipating a visit - say to Kansas City? Or perhaps I want the best ramen in the Des Moines area.
Scroll down, and you'll get various categories (reviews, new restaurants, food news, and nearby travel.). If you want to see everything within a category, click on "view all" to the right of each category heading.
I'll look for better ways to index, as I agree, it can be hard to find a particular article!

Exactly. It takes time to get to this point I’ve found.
Down with this movement! Have yet to visit one of your recommends, Wini, but will check back with a “knife, fork, and elbows” perspective ;*)

Always great to hear that someone else enjoys this place as much as I do! Thanks for weighing in.

Right now, the best place to see my archives is on my home page:
