Veteran journalist and food writer Jennifer Miller gives us exactly the kind of travel writing we want: informational, inspirational—and a great read, to boot.
And, if you have time, visit the Naniboujou Lodge and restaurant about 15 miles east of Grand Marais on Lake Superior. Google it for a picture of the dining hall and history behind the Lodge.
It's stunning. I went for breakfast in 2021 and it was still suffering from the pandemic. (the menu was pancakes or... pancakes. And not very good.) The whole staff was the owners' family. Several kids. We chatted a little bit with the owner who said that they were going to have close that fall (temporarily) when all the kids went back to school because they couldn't hire anyone. We haven't made it back but I sure hope things have gotten better for them.
Oh, they're still plugging away. And they're not open for the season yet, but looks like last year they were back to serving all three meals (tho dinner was served 6-630 p.m. .... 🤔) Even if you don't eat there, it's worth the drive just to poke your head in and look around the property.
I too have become a big fan of The North Shore. We never miss the Wright gas station. If you ask they might let you go to the waiting room upstairs. It is usually locked so you have to ask. Don’t miss the restrooms. You'll see some great Wright tile work!
And Gordy’s is for sure a do-not-miss. Two years ago I ended up going on the last day of Fall business. They ran oitof food so were closing early.
Grand Marais is a charming town with a great campground on the harbor. Its owned by the city. Very clean and reasonably priced.
Last year we did the South Shore of Superir into Wisconsin as far as Bayfield. It less seemed less “touristy” . We pure-bikes on the ferry to Madeline Island. Not many cars so it made for great fun!

I’ve always been so curious about that place!

I'm so sorry to hear that! It just sounds like such an incredible place. I've had my eye on it for years and years. I hope they can make it!
